Ampitji

In Tiwi cosmology, Ampitji, the Rainbow Serpent, is a powerful ancestral being and the guardian of water—both Winga (saltwater) and Kukunni (freshwater). Ampitji plays a vital role as a protector and caretaker of Country.

Ampitji watches over the Tiwi people to ensure that cultural responsibilities are upheld and that the land and waters are treated with respect and care. When people do the right thing—respecting laws, practicing culture, and looking after Country—Ampitji remains calm. But if Country is neglected, damaged, or disrespected, Ampitji becomes cranky, bringing warning signs or consequences to remind people of their duties.
